  • Wi-Fi for When the Fish ain’t Biting

We all love heading out on the boat, loaded up with gold reels and fancy lures to chase elusive gamefish around the ocean. For days on end this can get a bit tiresome, especially if you haven’t even seen so much as a fin.

How good would it be to have Wi-Fi available for days like this and quiet nights in the bay?

Last week Dan from our team went out to chase Southern Bluefin tuna on the Ngatoro Knoll around 50nm offshore in the bay of plenty. Conditions were stunning, there was hardly a breathe out there. Chat on the radio was hopeful but there wasn’t much action at all despite the weather and enthusiasm from anglers.

With a bit of downtime (a lot) we rigged up the Poynting antenna and Celerway GO modem to see what this could do in a real world offshore setting, the results were fantastic. Being about to achieve a streamable data connection at over 30 nautical miles was impressive. Not only were we able to stream HD on several platforms, but we could download the latest weather, get the SST’s updated and send pictures of the sunset to our friends – just to let them know how good it was out there and to re-affirm our lack of tuna on the deck.

The install is simple, Global Marine provide the system in a ready-to-go state meaning that it’s truly plug and play. We were online within minutes, and far out of range of our cell phones.

Here we show at 31nm offshore, data to stream HD on YouTube, Netflix, probably even the All Blacks game online if it were desired. This also meant that tucked into a bay at Mayor Island in the Bay if Plenty we could happy be browsing social feeds, watching content and staying in touch with our friends and family.

Cell coverage seemed to become patchy at around 8nm offshore, and at 14nm was pretty much unusable. Although there seem to be random spots where a message or email might come through it was not consistent and certainly didn’t allow any streaming or media download.

At 31nm offshore I have a download speed of around 8mbps. I could happily stream in 1080p from several platforms and easily make calls, check emails and socials and stay on top of business while watching the lures.

Don’t get me wrong, one little tick out of those gold reels it’s all action. We all know what we’d rather be doing but it can be hard to find the time to completely step away for several days. With solutions from Global Marine you can be onboard, online, and hopefully on the fish!

We at least hope you have better luck out on the fish than we did!

If a solution like this will help you spend more time on the water get in touch with us at Global Marine.

  • Connectivity Solution on Island Atoll

    Connectivity Solution on Island Atoll

We have recently been approached by a new customer requiring two internet solution for their residentials on an island Atoll. They came to us asking for speed and reliability to minimise business disruption when spending time on their little island in this remote paradise. Considering the remote location of the instal, we wanted to keep the solutions as easy and simple as possible, minimizing instal requirements and remote support.

This will allow employees on the atoll to deploy the solution, with our team remotely setting it up, to cut travel costs. We decided to opt for a combination of Cellular and the Starlink High Performance Flat Panel, with a Peplink BR1 Pro 5G as central router. This combination has been extensively tested by our team, achieving great results in terms of speed and reliability for the internet connection. The single Peplink web interface is also extremely user-friendly, even for clients to make minor adjustments to their network if they require so.

    Island Atoll Solution Diagram

To make these two solutions even more resilient and bulletproof, we implemented Iridium GO! as a backup, ready to kick in in case of extreme bad weather and/or temporary Starlink Network connectivity issues. This will allow the residents and guests of the Atoll to live fully life in paradise, stay connected with all the digital comforts as they were on mainland. This solution worked so well in this location that we decided to deploy it on a 51ft sailing catamaran that is mostly sailing in the same area. The owner asked for fast internet, an easy single interface to manage the network, and satellite connection as backup. This combination of Peplink with Starlink, and Iridium GO! as back up is exactly what the customer was looking for.

This technology is very similar to VPN and works in a similar fashion.

A virtual private network (VPN) is a technology that allows users to securely connect to the internet over a public or shared network. VPNs use encryption to secure the connection between the user’s device and the VPN server, which helps to protect against unauthorized access and data leaks.

There are several benefits to using a VPN:

    1. Improved security: VPNs provide an added layer of security by encrypting all internet traffic between the user’s device and the VPN server. This makes it much harder for hackers and other malicious actors to intercept or steal sensitive information.

    2. Privacy: VPNs can help to protect users’ privacy by masking their IP address and location. This makes it more difficult for websites and other online services to track users’ online activity.

    3. Access to restricted content: VPNs can be used to bypass internet censorship and access restricted content. For example, users in countries with strict internet censorship laws can use a VPN to access blocked websites and services.

    4. Improved performance: VPNs can help to improve internet performance by reducing congestion and optimizing the connection. This can be particularly useful for users in areas with slow or unreliable internet connectivity.

    5. Remote access: VPNs can be used to provide remote access to a company’s internal network, allowing employees to securely connect to the network from anywhere in the world.

Overall, VPNs are a useful tool for improving security, privacy, and internet performance, as well as for accessing restricted content and providing remote access to corporate networks.

    Background, Starlink:

Starlink, a division of SpaceX, is a satellite-based internet service provider that aims to bring high-speed, low-latency internet to customers around the world. One of the key markets that Starlink is targeting is the maritime industry, where reliable internet connectivity has long been a challenge.

Traditionally, ships at sea have relied on satellite phones or slow, expensive satellite internet connections for communication and navigation. This has made it difficult for ship owners and operators to stay connected with their crew, conduct business, and access the latest navigation and weather information.

With Starlink, ships can access a fast, stable internet connection through a small terminal mounted on the vessel. The terminal communicates with a network of low-Earth orbit satellites, which are able to deliver internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

In addition to providing internet connectivity, Starlink’s service can also be used for real-time vessel tracking and monitoring, as well as for remote monitoring and control of onboard systems. This can help ship owners and operators to improve efficiency and reduce costs, as well as increase safety and compliance.

Starlink’s service is currently in full roll out after beta testing, with a limited number of maritime customers participating in the trial. The company plans to roll out the service more broadly in the coming years, and it has already received a significant number of both order and pre-orders from the maritime industry.

Overall, the introduction of Starlink’s satellite-based internet service has the potential to revolutionize the maritime industry, providing a much-needed boost to connectivity and productivity at sea.
