After the roam change: bond Starlink to cellular, don’t bet the trip on one plan
Honest GMTS answer to the August Roam changes: one Starlink plan is not the whole connectivity strategy. We bond Starlink to cellular on Peplink — Hot Failover, SpeedFusion where the brief needs it — and we provision One NZ / roaming SIM estates we actually manage through GMTS Connect.
Outcome first: the vessel still has a path when the satellite plan hits a geography or timer wall. One sentence on the bond: multiple WANs, one router policy set, alerts in InControl when the active leg switches.
We cite Starlink TOS for limits and Peplink docs for failover behaviour. We do not name carriers we are not provisioning on your job.
What Starlink Roam now means for a NZ boat (read the account first)
Industry reports and customer emails say Global Roam ended 17 August 2026 and Roam Unlimited international use outside the registered home country is capped — often quoted as 30 days. We are not printing prices or day-counts here until we see the customer’s app and TOS. Copy on marketing pages can lag the legal text.
What we ask the owner to do first
Open the Starlink app — plan name, home country, travel alerts.
Coastal weekend, delivery passage and time beyond 12 nm are three different products. GMTS installs the kit and the Peplink router. We do not sell Starlink airtime.
Peplink 8.6.0 is GA. Don’t jump from 8.2.
Peplink 8.6.0 went GA on 29 July 2026. Our live news still talks 8.5.0 because most fleets we touch are not ready to hop straight from an old 8.2 build. This is the install-month playbook we are running on GMTS kit now.
What we do on a typical BR1 Pro / BR2 Pro / Dome / Transit / B One
Confirm PrimeCare / licence state in InControl2 and export a config backup.
Push an InControl policy to 8.5.4 first — Peplink’s GA thread calls out the hop from older 8.2–8.4 trains.
Read release notes for your exact model: IPsec key length, cert store and any EOS hardware called out on Peplink’s 8.6 page.
Schedule 8.6.0 on a maintenance window; watch SpeedFusion Score and WAN graphs during the first handover after upgrade.
What stays on 8.5.x for now
Legacy boxes — Balance 30 LTE, older MAX HD and anything Peplink marks EOS in the official notes — stay on the 8.5 maintenance train until we have a signed replacement path. We do not blanket-upgrade every GMTS router because the vendor page says GA.
Niue Government has published updates on an ongoing internet service disruption affecting the island. For GMTS jobs in the Pacific, island backhaul events matter even when your router dashboard still shows green on Starlink or cellular.
Practical checks
If you operate a site or vessel with business in Niue or neighbouring routes, confirm which WAN is actually carrying traffic — do not assume one green LED means every path is healthy.
On Peplink installs, open InControl and read per-WAN graphs; Hot Failover only helps if the backup leg is actually up.
Schedule critical uploads or firmware pushes for a window when you have confirmed end-to-end connectivity.

Reports of a submarine cable break near Taiwan are affecting connectivity into the Matsu Islands and some wider Pacific transit paths. This is the kind of outage that often never flips a Starlink or Peplink status page to red — but crews and island sites still feel it on latency and packet loss.

Latency and jitter spikes on Pacific routes that transit Taiwan-adjacent cable systems.
Island and coastal sites that depend on submarine backhaul rather than satellite primary.
Whether a vessel’s Starlink path is fine while a shore office on fibre is not — two different problems.
