Peplink Firmware 8.5.0: Smarter Security, Stronger Wi-Fi, and Optimized Routing

The new Peplink Firmware 8.5.0 brings a set of key enhancements from security to Wi-Fi to outbound traffic policies. Today, we’re going to deep dive into Network Access Control for Wired LAN Clients, Wi-Fi Private Pre-Shared Key (PPSK), Flexible Firewall Policy Management, Docker support via InControl, Least-Used outbound policies, and Assisted Roaming via 802.11k/v.

Network Access Control for Wired LAN Clients

You can now streamline access to your wired network by verifying both user and device credentials before they connect. This adds a layer of protection to prevent unauthorized wired access—a smart move as networks grow more sophisticated.

Advanced Security with Wi-Fi Private Pre-Shared Key (PPSK)

Instead of using a single shared password, each Wi-Fi client can now get a unique PPSK while still sharing the same SSID. This helps isolate devices and prevent one compromised password from affecting others—an excellent step up from traditional WPA/WPA2 personal setups.

Flexible Firewall Policy Management

Firewall rules can now be based on device catalogs instead of static IP or MAC addresses. That means you can define groups of devices using a common catalog (like “IoT Devices” or “Admin Laptops”) and then apply tailored firewall rules to each group—making policy management much more dynamic.

Docker Support on InControl

For those leveraging edge compute, you can now manage Docker containers directly through InControl. The new support includes command options such as --log-driver and --log-opt, giving you more flexibility and control over container behavior remotely.

Optimized Outbound Policies – “Least Used” Algorithm

Outbound policy now includes a flexible “Least Used” algorithm for cellular and mobility WAN connections. This intelligently directs traffic to the least loaded paths, helping reduce congestion and optimize network performance.

Wi-Fi Support: Assisted Roaming & 802.11k/v

  • Assisted Roaming: Wi-Fi clients can now automatically connect to the AP with the best signal using 802.11v standards—keeping performance smooth as they move.
  • 802.11k and 802.11v support: Enhanced handoff capabilities between managed APs, ensuring a seamless roaming experience without drops or delays.

In summary, Firmware 8.5.0 significantly boosts:

  • Network security via credential checking and unique Wi-Fi keys (PPSK)
  • Firewall flexibility with device catalog-based rules
  • Edge capabilities with Docker deployment via InControl
  • Traffic optimization through smart outbound routing (Least Used)
  • Wi-Fi experience with robust roaming support (802.11k/v and Assisted Roaming)
